55 years of sustainable plastic materials at Elmia Subcontractor

What an incredible experience at Elmia Subcontractor 2023!

A huge thank you to all who stopped by our stand; it was fantastic connecting with each of you, discussing industry trends and showcasing our innovations.

As we marked 55 years since our founder Hugo Jönsson established our company, it was incredible sharing this milestone with all our visitors. From the engaging true or false quiz about 1968 to our presentations on smart material choices, the participation was amazing.

Together, let’s continue the journey of reducing companies’ carbon footprint through smarter material solutions. Here’s to 55 more years of innovation and a more sustainable future!

On March 1 in 1968, Polykemi was founded by Hugo Jönsson, which means that we have been developing and producing plastic compounds in Sweden for more than 55 years. We want to shine some light on this at Elmia Subcontractor this year.

From 1968 to 2023

Initially, Polykemi focused on the Swedish market, but after just three years, the first step was taken beyond Sweden’s borders. Since then it has gone from strength to strength and the Polykemi Group now consists of a total of ten companies worldwide with over 300 employees and has the third generation working in the family business.

However, the head office and the largest of our now four production units are still in Ystad, where it all began.

We have come a long way since 1968 and have accumulated a lot of experience and knowledge about plastic compounding based on both virgin and recycled raw materials, which we bring into every project.

Sustainability has always been important to us, and in recent years our focus has increased further as we launched the Materialsmart®-concept in 2021.

The concept means, among other things, that we can present the CO₂ footprint of our materials when they leave our production facilities, based on a third-party certified LCA study. This, together with our long experience, gives us optimal conditions to help our customers choose the right material for the right product.

The latest development is that we are now also certified according to ISCC PLUS, which means that we can present two new biocircular PP compounds as additions to our product portfolio.

The new materials, NATUCOMP BPPH GF5030HC and NATUCOMP BPP EP317R UV, are based on biocircular and mass balanced raw materials. The properties are equivalent to existing fossil- and recycled based materials. More information about this is available on the stand.

What else happened in 1968?

Do you have a good idea of what else happened in the year 1968? Or just good at judging what’s true or false? Take our 1968 quiz in the stand and compete for a chance to win a movie ticket!

Or do you just want to know more about how you can reduce your company’s carbon footprint?

Either way, you are most welcome to visit stand B02:72!

Lectures on smart material choices

At Elmia Subcontractor, Henrik Palokangas will give our appreciated lecture on smart material choices.

Henrik Palokangas Sustainability Specialist for polymer materials

He will for example talk about our CO₂-e tool and how we can measure the climate impact of our products and help our customers to influence their climate footprint through their choice of materials.

He will share our insights on product type, placements and requirements etc. and how it determines whether virgin-, biocircular- or recycled based plastic raw materials is the best choice for optimized climate footprint.

When and where can you watch the lecture?

  • Tuesday, November 14, 11:00-12:00 – ”Utställarscen, Hall A”

  • Wednesday, November 15, 11:30-11:50 – “Utställarscen, Hall A”

Two other appearances

Henrik will also have two other appearances at the fair:

  • Wednesday, November 15, 10:10-10:50 – Main Stage, Hall B.

Presentation together with Marcus Wendin from Miljögiraff.

  • Thursday, November 16 kl 13:15-13:35 – Sustainability Arena, Hall C.

All presentations and discussions will be held in Swedish.
